July Saturday 21 and Sunday July 22 there will be an amateur radio "Special
Event" at Halifax, Pa. A special event radio station will be set up in the
area along RT 147 and RT 225 next to Sheetz, and just across the road from
Lisi Shell. Special event amateur (Ham) radio stations are activated to
celebrate various events, and to bring attention to the roll of amateur
radio in our everyday life.
Our special event evolved around the idea that it would be fun to try to get
as many Halifax towns, and cities on the air on the same days and see how
many people we could contact in that time period. Locally, we decided that
this would be a perfect opportunity to present amateur radio to the public
with a "hands on" display.
Our hands-on display will offer the public a chance to see, hear and touch a
real amateur radio station, and to, with our supervision, talk with other
amateur radio operators around the world. We will also show how we, as
amateur radio operators, assist the first responders, and served agencies
such as the Red Cross in emergencies.
We will also have information available for those who may be interested in
obtaining their amateur radio license.
Here is some of what you may see at the event, and our display. The Boy
Scouts will be present, working on part of their merit badge for
communications. We have invited Medic 6 to show an ambulance, and give a
tour. We have invited fire companies to show some equipment. We will have
two complete and operating ham radio stations on the air, operating on the
40 meter band (7.160 MHz) and the 20 meter band (14.260 MHz). We have
planned, weather permitting, a fly over of a classic 1946 Piper Cub air
craft, with amateur radio on board. We will be contacting this aircraft via
VHF 2 meter amateur radio. We will have handouts, and videos running, which
will show how we are involved in emergency communications, and how we have
fun with radio.
The Halifax communities that are working on the air, along with us are:
Halifax Vermont, Halifax North Carolina, and Halifax England. Each town
involved will be offering a special QSL card (Post Card) to confirm contact
with their station. We will be operating from approximately 9am until 4pm on
both Saturday and Sunday July 21 and 22.
